Moment of Geekiness in 2011

2011

It is the last day of the year, so every website, tv-show and newspaper is looking back on the year 2011 and making lists. Moment of Geekiness can’t miss out on this, so we look back on the 10 most popular moments of geekiness of 2011:

10.  Siri settles an argument – The launch of Siri in iOS 5 in november caused quite a few parody videos like this one.

9. The best WiFi names – In honor of WiFi day (802.11), we posted the a set of the funniest WiFi names.

8. Working with multiple computers on one desk – Given the popularity of this post, I guess most of the MoG readers have multiple computers.

7. Revenge [Minecraft Parody Music Video] – Although Minecraft was voted game of the year in 2010, it got released in november of this year. This post is also the most popular of all the geeky music videos at MoG this year.

6. Buddhist Steve Jobs – October 5th Apple CEO Steve Jobs passed away. This didn’t stop people making funny comics about Jobs.

5. 5 (+1) to customize Android – Although there are two Apple related post in this top 10, the post on customizing Android was more popular.

4. Science Geek Pick-up Lines – I haven’t heard from anyone who tested them, so I guess they don’t work that well.

3. 5 Spotify alternatives – After Spotify announced in March to further restrict the free accounts, we posted five alternatives to Spotify. I think a lot of you guys switched, because Spotify dropped the listening hours restriction.

2. Doctor Who (Mini) Episode: Time – A lot of Doctor Who fans visited MoG to watch the mini episode for Red Nose day.

1. A USB connector that works both ways – Many people seem to have problems plugging in USB cables, since this post was visited by 26000 people in one day.

Of course, you can’t look back on a year without setting a New Year’s resolution. Well, at MoG we have two; the first is 1920 x 1080 and the second is to make more posts ourselves (like 1, 3 and 5 in the list above) and to ‘steal’ less from Internet.

Happy New Year and see you in 2012!

Gaming in 2011

Just a few more days and 2011 comes to an end. That is probably also the reason YouTuber MalcolmWKlock made montage of some of the games released this year.

It has been a pretty good year of games this year with titles as Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Skyrim, Portal 2, L.A. Noire, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and much more.

2011 in Lego

We are nearing the end of 2011, which means it is time to look back on the past year. A couple of Flickr users found a really creative way of showing the major new events of 2011; they recreated the news in Lego.

April Fools List 2011

If you looked at the calendar, you probably noticed it is April Fools today. Of course, this means that your friends will tell you your fly is open and shoelace is loose, but it is also the day companies will launch new fake products and services.

LinkedinLinkedIn
The people who use LinkedIn are probably familiar with the ‘People you might know’ block in the sidebar. Today it showed people who everyone knows, like Albert Einstein and Dr. Watson.

YouTube
Youtube is known for their April Fools jokes. Couple of years ago they rickrolled everyone and last years they added the ASCII. This year they added the option to view the vintage 1911 version of a video by adding &vintage=1911 to the video. (There are some other years working; try 1987,1997 and 2005)

XKCD
The webcomic tried to give its readers a headache with an 3D effect.

Toshiba
Another company experimenting with 3D was Toshiba. The announced the world’s first 3D monocle. They said you’ll experience one-eyed 3D so real, you’d think you were using both eyes!

Kodak
Kodak announced an app that automatically removes exes from photos named Relationshiffft

Qualcomm
Qualcomm makes processors for smartphones, tablets and other electronics. Their platform is called Snapdragon and in order to let their engineers feel the power of the dragon, they send them on a “Way of the Dragon retreat”

Thinkgeek
The seller of geeky products adds new fake products to their every year. This year they added these nice Star Wars Lightsaber Popsicles. However they are fake now, there are some products in their shop that originally started as April Fools product, that later got added as real product.

WolframAlpha
The computational search engine decided to move to beta today and with it their changed their name and logo to BieberBeta.

Google
Google had a couple of jokes. They introduced Gmail Motion today, which allows you to control Gmail with your body.

Google is also looking for new employees for the job of autocompleter.

It was not the day to use the search engine to look for information about Helvetica. The search for the most loved by designers font would give the results in the most hated font: Comic Sans.

The Google Voice Search team decided it was time for a new language for their app on Android. They added pig latin. It is really simple, for each English word, the first consonant (or consonant cluster) is moved to the end of the word and an “ay” is affixed (for example, “pig” yields “ig-pay” and “search” yields “earch-say”).  In the video is shown how to configure it on your Android phone.

I probably missed a few, so feel free to add some more April Fools in the comment section.
